Photographer Biography
Joan L. Brown is a photographer based in New York City. She has been working on "Infected and Affected: Portraits of a Community Combating Stigma," for almost 2 years. She anticipates that the principle photography for this project will be completed in 2010; as currently conceived, the work is being presented in the form of life-size prints, in a nontraditional "installation" environment. Her previous project, "Before It's Too Late," photographed in Antarctica, concerned the fragile relationship between human globalization and the resulting environmental consequences. Brown's most recent projects share a similar challenge and intention: to both tangibly and theoretically change the viewer's perception of our world. Brown's work has been internationally exhibited, collected and published. Brown's photographs from India, Australia, Mexico and the United States have been featured in POZ magazine and its sister publication Real Health.
